Each property is either **instant booking** or **booking request**:

- With instant booking, the stay is confirmed when the guest pays.
- With booking requests, nothing is confirmed until you accept. The guest's card is only held, not charged, and it is captured when you say yes. If you decline, the hold is released.

## Long-stay and solo pricing built in

Remote workers stay longer, and you can reward that. Set a long-stay promotion and it applies to the price automatically. For private rooms you can also set a discount for solo travellers. The two stack sequentially, so a private room with a 20% solo discount and a 15% long-stay discount is priced at the base rate times 0.80 times 0.85. Two separate discounts can apply to a private-room booking on Offshore Stays, and a common question is whether you get whichever one is bigger, or both. The answer is both — they apply one after the other, not as a single combined percentage, which usually works out better for longer solo stays than either discount alone.

## The two discounts

**Solo discount** applies to private rooms booked by a single guest. It doesn't apply to shared/dorm rooms — those are priced per bed already, so the "traveling alone" pricing logic doesn't apply the same way.

**Long-stay discount** is a promotion a host can configure for stays over a minimum number of nights. It applies to both private and dorm rooms when the stay qualifies — unlike the solo discount, it isn't restricted to private rooms.

## How they stack

The two discounts apply **sequentially**, not by taking the larger one: the solo discount is applied to the base price first, then the long-stay discount is applied to that already-discounted price.

A worked example using real numbers from one of our own listings: a private ensuite room with a 20% solo discount and a long-stay promotion of 15% off for stays of 14+ nights, on a base price of €1500:

1. Start: €1500
2. After 20% solo discount: €1500 × 0.80 = €1200
3. After 15% long-stay discount: €1200 × 0.85 = **€1020**

That's a combined effective discount of 32% off the original base price — more than either discount alone, because the second discount is calculated on the already-reduced number, not stacked as a flat 35% subtracted from the original.

## Why dorm rooms are different

Shared dorm beds never receive the solo discount — there's no "traveling alone" pricing to apply since you're already paying per bed rather than per room. They do still benefit from a long-stay discount when the host has configured one and your stay is long enough to qualify.

If you're traveling solo and considering a longer stay, the private-room math above is worth checking on a specific listing rather than assuming — the exact percentages and minimum-night thresholds are set per property, so they vary from one stay to the next. Book a stay on Offshore Stays and you'll sometimes see it confirmed instantly, and other times see it marked as a request pending the host's approval. That's not a bug or an inconsistency — it's a deliberate distinction, and it's worth understanding before you book, especially if your dates are tight.

## The two booking types

**Instant booking** means the stay is confirmed the moment you complete checkout. The host has opted into confirming bookings automatically, and our pricing system was able to fully price every night of your stay from live calendar data.

**Booking request** means your reservation needs the host to actually say yes before it's confirmed. This happens for one of two reasons: either the host has deliberately chosen to review bookings before confirming them (some hosts prefer this, especially for longer or larger group stays), or — more often — our system couldn't find a confirmed price for every night of your requested stay from the host's calendar, and won't guess.

Both are legitimate outcomes, not something gone wrong. If a request is required, we'd rather tell you honestly than confirm something we can't actually guarantee.

## What happens to your card

This is the part people worry about, understandably. For a booking request, your card is **held, not charged** — a pre-authorization for the amount, similar to what a hotel does at check-in. Nothing is actually captured unless and until the host approves. If the host declines, or doesn't respond in time, the hold is released and you're not charged.

For an instant booking, the normal deposit is captured immediately, exactly as you'd expect from any confirmed reservation.

## How long a host has to respond

A host has **48 hours** to respond to a booking request. If they don't respond within that window, the hold on your card is automatically released and the request lapses — you're never left in limbo indefinitely waiting on an answer.

## Getting a request approved faster

A few things genuinely help: make sure your guest count is accurate (a mismatch is one of the most common reasons a host hesitates), keep your dates as-is rather than requesting last-minute changes mid-request, and if the listing has an option to add a note to the host, use it — a short, specific note about your trip goes a long way with hosts who are reviewing requests personally rather than auto-confirming.

## Bottom line

Instant or request, the underlying goal is the same: don't confirm a price or a date we can't actually stand behind. If you see "request" instead of an instant confirmation, it isn't a red flag — it just means a human is double-checking before your card is charged.
