Best Time of Year for Surf & Remote Work: Canggu, Ericeira, and Taghazout

"Best time to visit" doesn't have one answer for a surf destination — it depends on whether you want bigger, more consistent swell (better if you're an experienced surfer chasing quality waves) or smaller, calmer conditions (better if you're newer, or just want easier, more relaxed sessions). Each of our three destinations follows a version of the same pattern; here's the timing summarized in one place instead of split across three posts.

Canggu

Canggu's beach breaks are relatively consistent through the year compared to the more seasonal Atlantic destinations below, since it sits close to the equator. The bigger day-to-day factor is timing within the day, not time of year: mornings are cleaner before the thermal onshore wind picks up around midday, which is also why the local rhythm of surfing at dawn and working the rest of the day (covered in the Canggu guide) works so well here.

Ericeira

Autumn through spring brings bigger, more consistent north Atlantic swell — the season serious surfers tend to target, and when Ribeira d'Ilhas shows why it's a World Tour stop. Summer is smaller and calmer, better suited to beginners or anyone prioritizing easy, relaxed sessions over wave quality, though it's also the busier season with visitors from Lisbon. Full detail in the Ericeira guide.

Taghazout

The same broad pattern as Ericeira: autumn through spring for bigger, more consistent swell suited to intermediate/advanced surfers, summer for smaller and calmer conditions that suit beginners or a more relaxed pace. See the Taghazout guide for specifics on which breaks work best at which time.

The short version

  • Want the biggest, most consistent waves and don't mind more experienced company: Ericeira or Taghazout, autumn through spring.
  • New to surfing, or want calmer, more forgiving conditions: any of the three in their respective summer/dry season, or Canggu generally given its more consistent year-round pattern.
  • Timing matters less than you'd think for Canggu specifically — the daily dawn-to-midday window matters more than the calendar month.

Whichever timing fits your surf goals, remote-work logistics (wifi, coworking, desks) don't really have a "season" at any of the three — browse current stays whenever you're ready to book.
