Cost of Living Breakdown: Canggu vs Ericeira vs Taghazout for Remote Workers

Our comparison of Canggu, Ericeira, and Taghazout covers the vibe and trade-offs of each. This one is the budget-planning follow-up: a category-by-category look at what things actually cost, so you can weigh the decision against your own runway rather than a general impression.

A caveat worth stating upfront: these are general ranges based on typical experiences, not verified pricing data, and costs shift with season, exchange rates, and how you personally travel. Treat this as a starting point for your own research, not a guarantee.

Accommodation

Of the three, Taghazout tends to run cheapest for comparable quality, Canggu sits in the middle (with huge variance — a basic room and a design-forward co-living villa are very different prices), and Ericeira lands closest to broader Western European rates, though still well below central Lisbon. In all three, a longer stay meaningfully lowers the effective nightly rate — see our long-stay discount post for how that's calculated on our own listings.

Food

Local food is inexpensive in all three destinations if you eat where locals eat rather than at tourist-facing restaurants. Canggu has the widest range, including a large number of Western-style cafes and health-food spots that cost noticeably more than local warungs. Ericeira and Taghazout both have less of that price split — food costs are more consistently moderate across most options.

Coworking and work costs

Canggu has the most mature paid-coworking market — real dedicated spaces with day passes and monthly memberships, priced accordingly. Ericeira and Taghazout lean more on cafes-as-workspace, which is often free (with the courtesy of ordering something) but less reliable for a dedicated desk during busy hours — a work-focused stay with its own wifi and desk setup (like our listings in each location) closes that gap without needing a paid coworking membership.

Local transport

All three effectively require a scooter or similar for daily life outside a small walkable core — rental costs are broadly comparable across the three, though fuel and maintenance costs vary with local prices. None of the three make sense to navigate by taxi/rideshare as your primary transport for anything beyond occasional trips.

Putting it together

If minimizing cost is the primary driver, Taghazout usually wins on a pure numbers basis. If you want the most mature paid infrastructure and are willing to pay for it, Canggu's coworking market reflects that. Ericeira sits in between, trading a bit more cost for EU logistics and a wider range of surf for different skill levels.

For accommodation specifically, the most accurate number is always the live "from" price on the listing itself rather than a general estimate — browse Canggu, Ericeira, or Taghazout stays to see current pricing.
