Surf and Remote Work in Puerto Escondido, Mexico
By Offshore Stays Editorial
Puerto Escondido is a town on the Pacific coast of Oaxaca, Mexico. Its best-known wave, on Zicatela beach, is powerful and best left to experienced surfers, but the town also has more approachable spots, and it draws a mix of surfers, travellers and remote workers.
Surf
Zicatela is heavy and demanding. Nearby, Carrizalillo is a small, sheltered bay that suits beginners, and La Punta has a more forgiving wave. Bigger swells tend to arrive in the middle of the year, while other months can be smaller. Always check conditions and ask locals before paddling out.
Working from Puerto Escondido
The climate is hot and humid, so air conditioning and a shaded workspace matter. Connectivity varies by accommodation and can be affected by weather, so confirm the connection type and backup with your host and carry a local SIM or eSIM.
Getting there
There is an airport with connections to Mexico City, and long-distance buses and roads link the town to the rest of Oaxaca.
