Surf and Remote Work in Peniche, Portugal
By Offshore Stays Editorial
Peniche sits on a peninsula on Portugal's Atlantic coast, roughly an hour and a half by road north of Lisbon. It is best known among surfers for Supertubos, a fast beach break that hosts professional events, but the real appeal is variety: because the peninsula points into the ocean, there is usually a break somewhere that is sheltered from the wind.
Surf
Beginners tend to head to the beaches around Baleal, where surf schools and camps cluster. Intermediate and advanced surfers have plenty of options, and Supertubos is for experienced surfers only. Swell is generally bigger from autumn to spring, and summer is smaller but often windy. Plan on a wetsuit for most of the year: the Atlantic is cool.
Working from Peniche
Peniche is a working fishing town as well as a surf destination, so there are cafes, shops and services year-round, not only in summer. Coworking options exist but are fewer than in larger nomad hubs, so check connectivity and workspace with your host before you book, and bring a backup data plan.
Getting there
Lisbon airport is the usual gateway, followed by a bus or a car. A car makes it easier to move between breaks.
