Surf and Remote Work in Weligama, Sri Lanka
By Offshore Stays Editorial
Weligama is a town on Sri Lanka's south coast with a wide, sandy bay where the waves are gentle. That makes it one of the most popular places in the region for learning to surf, and it has a growing community of long-stay visitors and remote workers.
Surf
The bay suits beginners and longboarders. Intermediate surfers can travel along the coast to reef breaks in nearby villages such as Midigama and Ahangama. Water is warm year-round, so no wetsuit is needed. The south coast surf season runs roughly from November to April; outside that window the sea can be rougher and the weather wetter.
Working from Weligama
Wifi quality varies between guesthouses, so ask specifically about the connection and whether there is a backup. Carrying a local SIM as a second connection is sensible. Cafes and coworking spaces along this stretch of coast cater to remote workers, but availability changes, so confirm before you rely on one.
Getting around
Tuk-tuks and scooters are common. Galle, with its fort and more services, is a short trip along the coast.
