Private Room or Dorm? Choosing the Right Bed for Remote Work
By Offshore Stays Editorial
Both options work in a surf house. The right one depends on how much of your day is spent on calls and how much you value company.
When a private room is worth it
- You have regular video calls or need a quiet space to concentrate.
- You work unusual hours and do not want to disturb, or be disturbed.
- You are staying for several weeks and want a space that feels like yours.
Private rooms can also come with a solo discount for one traveller, and it stacks with any long-stay promotion. The worked example is in how long-stay and solo discounts work.
When a dorm makes sense
- You want the lowest price.
- Your work is flexible and you use a shared workspace or a cafe for calls.
- You want to meet people quickly.
Dorms do not get the solo discount, but they can still receive long-stay promotions when the stay qualifies.
A middle path
Some houses combine private rooms with shared social areas and a coworking room, so you can be private during work and social after it. Use our checklist for a work-friendly surf house to compare.
Decide by your calendar
Count your calls in a typical week. If it is more than a couple, choose private. If your work is mostly heads-down and asynchronous, a dorm may be fine.
